Warner Bros. Games Acquires Player First Games, Developer of MultiVersus
Warner Bros. Games has officially acquired Player First Games, the studio responsible for the development of the crossover platform fighter MultiVersus. The financial details of the transaction have not been revealed. According to a press release, Player First Games will continue to operate under the leadership of its co-founders, Tony Huynh and Chris White.
This acquisition comes shortly after the relaunch of MultiVersus on May 28. Player First Games had initially worked on the game as a contract studio, and Warner Bros. has now decided to integrate the studio into its operations due to its successful performance. This move follows Warner Bros.’ decision to close the mobile division of Netherrealm Studios, the developer behind Mortal Kombat.
David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Games, stated, “We have collaborated with Player First Games over several years to develop and launch MultiVersus, and we are thrilled to welcome this talented team into Warner Bros. Games. The creative and skilled team at Player First Games enhances our extensive development capabilities.”
Tony Huynh expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “Our team is excited to join the Warner Bros. Games family. We believe this integration will greatly benefit MultiVersus overall. We are committed to making the MultiVersus gaming experience the best it can be, and having our development team closely integrated with the publisher is ideal for our players.”
MultiVersus is a 2v2 fighting game inspired by Super Smash Bros., featuring characters from various Warner Bros. franchises. The game initially launched in open beta in 2022, was temporarily taken down for redevelopment, and was re-released this year. The second content season has recently begun, introducing new characters like The Joker, Agent Smith, Jason Voorhees, and the newly announced Samurai Jack and Beetlejuice.
