Legend of Zelda Breath of Wild: How to get the Mastersword
From the Woodland Tower, the expansive forest seems to be encircled by water on nearly all sides. However, attempting to ascend or glide into the Lost Woods will send Link back to the starting point, accompanied by enigmatic laughter.
To access the Lost Woods, you must follow the path heading northeast from the tower until the area becomes enveloped in fog, leading you to a large, crumbling archway.
In the subsequent areas, straying from the designated trail under any circumstances will cause you to be returned to the previous checkpoint—the grand archway. Here, you’ll notice a lit torch, with additional ones further along your route.
Pay attention to the direction in which the embers are drifting, and proceed solely in that direction. This should lead you to another torch stand, which you should also navigate towards using the same technique. From the initial torch, head north, then another north, followed by west, then west again, south, and finally look west to identify two torches in the distance before encountering a massive Ogre Tree that has a chest lodged in its mouth.
Beyond the two torches, navigating becomes more challenging—there are no longer any torches available to guide you. A wrong turn will quickly immerse you in fog, transporting you back to the torches. If you act swiftly, you may evade the fog, but it moves with incredible speed.
To find your way, use a torch or any flammable weapon, igniting it at the two torches. Fortunately, there is an unlit torch propped up against one of the stands.
Remain still and observe the embers rising from the top of the torch. They will drift slightly in the direction you need to follow. Continue tracking the embers, and you will eventually make your way to the Korok Forest, where the Master Sword resides. You can also set your sensor to locate treasure chests and follow the signal until you reach a trench.
Obtaining the Master Sword
Upon reaching the heart of the grove, you will finally encounter the Master Sword. However, attempting to draw it will invoke a sudden vision, awakening the Great Deku Tree to address you.
A great deal has transpired since the sword was placed here 100 years ago, and only those imbued with power can claim the Master Sword—including yourself, even after all this time. Depending on your progress in the game, you may not yet be deemed worthy of the blade. If you attempt to pull it, you will gradually lose heart containers. Should you lack sufficient Heart Containers, the sword cannot be removed from its pedestal. The first time you try, the Great Deku Tree will intervene before your final heart is depleted—but subsequent attempts will come at great personal risk.
In reality, extracting the Master Sword necessitates a minimum of 13 Heart Containers. Starting with three hearts at the game’s outset means you’ll require an additional ten Heart Containers. These can be acquired by trading four Spirit Orbs or completing one of the Divine Beast Dungeons. Thus, the number of Spirit Orbs needed varies depending on how many dungeons you have conquered; if none have been completed, you’ll need as many as 40 Spirit Orbs, while having completed all will require only 24—or a number anywhere in between.
Wielding the Master Sword
Even the Blade that Seals the Darkness is subject to specific limitations. While you can wield it almost anywhere, engaging regular enemies will still deplete its durability. At this point, it may seem broken and rendered unusable for several minutes until it regenerates.
The blade can only be used without concerns of breaking in the presence of Ganon or one of his manifestations—so exercise caution when deciding to wield it.
