3 Ways to obtain the master sword on Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
The most effective weapon in Tears of the Kingdom is undoubtedly The Master Sword. This sword is not only formidable but also has the ability to regenerate after losing its durability. Although you can depend on various strong weapon fusions to progress through the game, one has to question whether Link’s appearance is truly complete without the iconic Master Sword and the Hylian Shield.
There are several methods to acquire the sword, depending on the route you choose. As long as you possess two full wheels of stamina, there are officially three ways to obtain the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom. Below is all the essential information you need, or you can refer to our Master Sword walkthrough for more comprehensive details.
- Purifying the Great Deku Tree
The main method for acquiring the Master Sword closely resembles the approach from Breath of the Wild, with a twist. You will first have to complete most of the primary quests until you receive a task to visit the Great Deku Tree, known as the Trail of the Master Sword.
Much like in Breath of the Wild, you must journey to the Lost Woods in the Great Hyrule forest. Navigating through the Depths will help you enter, followed by clearing the Gloom to reach the tree. After this, the Great Deku will indicate the Master Sword’s location on your map. For help, see our guide to navigating the Lost Woods.
- Locate All Dragon Tears (Geoglyphs)
Depending on whether you stick to the main storyline in Tears of the Kingdom, you will likely find yourself engaged in a quest called Impa and the Geoglyphs. Outside the New Serenne Stable in Hyrule Ridge, Impa will be beside a hot air balloon waiting for you.
This quest will guide you in uncovering all the Geoglyphs and Dragon Tear locations. By unveiling all these memories, you will receive a quest update that points directly to the Master Sword.
- Locate the Light Dragon
The fastest way to obtain the Master Sword is by locating the Light Dragon. While the simplest method to find the Light Dragon is by completing one of the previous quests for its location, if you’re determined, you can attempt to reach it beforehand.
Given the Light Dragon’s high altitude early in the game, you will need to either create a Zonai Device that can fly high or leap from one of the tallest islands. One such island is Zonaite Forge Island, which can be accessed by climbing up the waterfall.
To complicate matters, you have to locate the Light Dragon and jump onto its back. Unlike in Breath of the Wild, the Dragons now circle around all of Hyrule, making them difficult to catch. You can consult our guide to the Light Dragon Path for assistance. Once you manage to get on its back, you’ll discover the Master Sword embedded in its head. While you’re there, consider gathering some Dragon parts too.
