Legend of Zelda Link to the past Ganon’s Tower Walkthrough

Congratulations, you’ve made it to the final dungeon, Ganon’s Tower. This is a combination of everything you’ve learned so far. You’ll revisit old enemies and puzzle types, but with a significant increase in difficulty.

Before You Begin

  • Location: Ganon’s Tower is located on Death Mountain in the Dark World, in the same spot where the Tower of Hera was in the Light World.
  • Accessing the Tower: After you’ve collected all seven crystals from the dungeons, the seven maidens will use their combined power to break the barrier protecting Ganon’s Tower.
  • Required Items: You will need a full arsenal, but here are the most critical items for this dungeon:
    • Master Sword: (and hopefully the Tempered or Golden Sword)
    • Bow & Arrows: Essential for many puzzles and enemies.
    • Bombs
    • Hookshot
    • Hammer
    • Fire Rod
    • Cane of Somaria
    • Magic Cape or Cane of Byrna
    • Magic Powder
    • Big Key: Found in this dungeon.

Dungeon Walkthrough

Ganon’s Tower is a difficult, multi-floor dungeon filled with puzzles and enemies from the previous dungeons.

  • Revisiting Old Friends (and Foes): The dungeon is a “greatest hits” of the game’s challenges. You’ll encounter:
    • Hardhat Beetles: That you’ll need to hit into pits with your sword.
    • Wizzrobes: Who will teleport and shoot fireballs at you.
    • Wallmasters: Be careful, they’ll drop from the ceiling and send you back to the beginning of the dungeon.
    • Conveyor Belts & Crystal Switches: You’ll need to use bombs and your sword to solve puzzles involving these.
  • The Red Mail: The ultimate armor upgrade, the Red Mail, is located in a Big Chest in this dungeon. The Red Mail reduces damage to one-fourth of the original amount, making you incredibly durable for the final fights.
  • Navigating the Floors:
    • 1F: The first floor is a maze of crystal switches, conveyor belts, and enemies. You’ll need to use bombs to hit switches and your Hookshot to cross pits.
    • 2F: Here, you’ll encounter a room with an invisible pathway over a pit. Use your Fire Rod to light the torches and reveal the path temporarily. Be quick and follow the path to the end. The Cane of Somaria is also useful for creating temporary blocks to cross gaps.
    • B1: You’ll drop down to a basement floor where you must face a final battle with the Armos Knights, the boss from the Eastern Palace. However, this time the floor is slippery with ice, adding a new challenge.
  • The Big Key: The Big Key is located on the B1 floor after you defeat the Armos Knights. It’s essential to open the door to the upper floors and the final boss.

Final Boss Battle: Agahnim (Round 2)

Before you can face Ganon, you must defeat his alter ego, Agahnim, for a second time. This battle takes place at the top of Ganon’s Tower.

  • The Battle: Agahnim will be joined by two clones. All three will teleport around the room and cast magic.
  • Strategy:
    • Hit the real Agahnim with your sword. You can tell which one is real because the others are transparent.
    • Agahnim will also fire a fireball at you. You can hit this with your sword to send it back at him, which is the primary way to damage him.
    • His clones will fire smaller, less damaging projectiles. You can also send these back, but they don’t do as much damage.
    • After enough hits, the real Agahnim will disappear, and you will fall through a hole in the floor to face Ganon.

The True Final Boss: Ganon

After you defeat Agahnim, you’ll be transported to the Pyramid of Power for the final confrontation with Ganon.

  • Phase 1: Ganon’s Teleporting: Ganon will teleport around the room and attack with a trident. He will also throw boomerangs that create a wall of fire.
  • Strategy:
    • Hit him with your sword when he reappears. You can also use the Master Sword for this.
    • Dodge his fire boomerang and be careful not to get trapped by the fire walls.
  • Phase 2: The Darkness: After taking enough damage, Ganon will turn the room dark. He will become invisible except for a small, flickering shadow.
  • Strategy:
    • Light the two torches in the room with your Fire Rod.
    • Once the torches are lit, Ganon will become visible for a short time. He will stop and do a spinning attack. This is your chance to stun him with a sword attack.
    • After you hit him, he will freeze and turn blue. This is your moment. Use a Silver Arrow to hit him.
    • Repeat this process: light the torches, hit him with your sword to stun him, then hit him with a Silver Arrow.

After a few hits with the Silver Arrows, Ganon will be defeated, and you can finally claim the Triforce. Congratulations, you have beaten The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past!
