Nintendo of America is undergoing a significant leadership change, as its president and COO, Doug Bowser, has officially announced his retirement, effective December 31, 2025.

This news marks the end of an era for the gaming giant and sets the stage for a new chapter under fresh leadership. His departure is a major event in the video game industry, not just because of the high-profile position he held, but also because of the legacy he leaves behind and the new path his successor will forge. Bowser, whose name has been a source of amusing irony for fans, will hand the reins to a seasoned veteran from within the company’s ranks, signaling a commitment to continuity and long-term strategy.

A Distinguished Career at the Helm

Doug Bowser joined Nintendo in 2015 as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 2019, he stepped into the role of President and COO of Nintendo of America, succeeding the charismatic and beloved Reggie Fils-Aimé. While some fans noted his more reserved, business-focused public presence compared to his predecessor’s vibrant personality, Bowser’s tenure has been defined by remarkable business success and expansion. His leadership oversaw some of Nintendo’s most significant modern milestones.

Under his guidance, Nintendo of America navigated the continued success of the Nintendo Switch, cementing its status as one of the best-selling consoles in history. He also played a key role in the launch of its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2, which has had a record-breaking sales period since its release earlier this year. Beyond console hardware, Bowser’s time as president saw Nintendo branch out in bold new ways. The company expanded its entertainment ventures, with the immensely successful animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the opening of new theme park attractions, which have brought Nintendo’s characters and worlds to a broader audience. These moves demonstrated a clear strategy to evolve Nintendo from a purely gaming company into a multifaceted entertainment powerhouse.

In a statement, Bowser reflected on his time, saying, “Leading Nintendo of America has been the honor of a lifetime, and I am proud of what our team has accomplished in both business results and the experiences we’ve created for consumers.” He expressed confidence in the future of the company, and in the person chosen to lead it next.

Passing the Torch to a New Generation of Leadership

With Bowser’s retirement, Nintendo has announced two pivotal leadership changes. Devon Pritchard, a 19-year veteran of Nintendo of America, will become the new President and COO, making her the first woman to hold this position. Pritchard, who has served in various executive roles, including her current position as Executive Vice President of Revenue, Marketing, and Consumer Experience, has a deep understanding of the company’s operations and its core values. Her extensive background in marketing and business affairs positions her well to continue the company’s momentum.

In her statement, Pritchard praised Bowser as a “fantastic mentor” and expressed her excitement to “build on the incredible foundation he has helped establish.” Her focus will be on strengthening the connection between fans and Nintendo’s characters, aiming to “surprise and delight” longtime players while welcoming new ones into the Nintendo family.

In a separate, but equally important, move, Satoru Shibata will join Nintendo of America as Chief Executive Officer. He will continue his roles as Managing Executive Officer and Corporate Director at Nintendo Co., Ltd. (the company’s Japanese headquarters). Shibata is a familiar face to many long-time Nintendo fans, having previously served as the president of Nintendo of Europe and Australia, and appearing frequently in European Nintendo Directs. His appointment as CEO of the American branch, a position that has been effectively vacant since the passing of Satoru Iwata, suggests a potential move by Nintendo’s headquarters to exert greater influence and oversight over its American operations.

What This Means for the Future

This leadership transition comes at a critical time for Nintendo. The company is riding a wave of success with its hardware and expanded entertainment ventures. Pritchard’s promotion from within the company signifies a focus on institutional knowledge and a continuation of the strategies that have proven so successful. The appointment of Shibata as CEO, however, adds an interesting dynamic. It could mean a more unified global strategy, with closer alignment between the American and Japanese headquarters.

While Bowser’s public presence was often less visible than that of his predecessor, his impact on the company is undeniable. He oversaw a period of immense growth, from the Switch’s initial explosion to the expansion of the brand into movies and theme parks. As fans bid farewell to Doug Bowser, they also look forward to what a new leadership team, with the combined experience of Devon Pritchard and Satoru Shibata, will bring to the table. The coming years will be a test of how this new generation of leadership can build on Nintendo’s legacy of innovation and joy, ensuring the company remains a dominant force in the ever-evolving world of entertainment.
